Individuals who endured abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The organization is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," they stated.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the position in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist shared they were victimized by a priest who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

They noted the leader was "compassionate" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled documents that they plan to present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they told the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to build that bond is a move in the right direction," Hickey commented.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story ends - he appreciated that."
