In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
