Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
