A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
