Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
