The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
