Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
